Climate Zone Map of Australia which will determine the requirements of your NatHERS Certificate

NATHERS CERTIFICATE GUIDE: HOW TO ACHIEVE 7-STAR RATINGS

28 April 2026

The "7-star" requirement varies significantly depending on whether you are building in the humid tropics of Darwin or the alpine regions of Tasmania. Here is how to optimize your rating: obtaining an accredited certificate is no longer just a "tick-box" exercise—it’s a critical step in the design and certification process.

What is a NatHERS Certificate?

A Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) certificate provides a star rating (out of 10) based on the building’s design, materials, and location. It measures how much heating and cooling a home will need to stay comfortable year-round.

An official NatHERS Certificate includes:

  • A unique QR code for verification.
  • The Thermal Star Rating (now requiring a minimum of 7 stars).
  • The Whole of Home rating (measuring appliances, solar, and hot water).
  • Detailed specifications on insulation, glazing, and building materials.

How to Get a NatHERS Certificate

To ensure your certificate is accepted by your local council or private certifier, follow these steps:

  • Provide Final Architectural Plans: Ensure your plans include floor layouts, elevations, sections, and window schedules.
  • Consult an Accredited Assessor: Only assessors accredited by an AAO (like Design Matters National) can issue certificates with the official NatHERS logo.
  • Thermal Modelling: Your assessor will use software (like HERO, FirstRate5, BERS Pro) to model the home’s performance.
  • Certification: Once the design meets the 7-star minimum, the certificate is generated and used for your Construction Certificate (CC) or Complying Development Certificate (CDC).

Achieving 7-Stars in Every Climate Zone

The climate zone map of Australia dictates the "7-star" requirement varies significantly depending on whether you are building in the humid tropics of Darwin or the alpine regions of Tasmania. Here is how to optimize your rating:

  • Climate Zones 1-3 (Tropical/Sub-Tropical): Focus on cross-ventilation, ceiling fans, and appropriate glazing to keep heat out.
  • Climate Zones 4-6 (Temperate/Sydney/Perth): Balance is key. Use passive solar design to let the sun in during winter while providing shading for summer.
  • Climate Zones 7-8 (Cool/Alpine): Prioritize high R-value wall, ceiling & under floor insulation and appropriate glazing to trap heat inside.

Pro Tip: To reach 7 stars without breaking the budget, focus on orientation first. Simply flipping a floor plan to face north can often gain you 0.5 to 1 full star for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a NatHERS Certificate cost? The cost depends on the complexity of the design. A standard single-storey home is generally more affordable than a multi-unit development or a bespoke architectural home. Check out our NatHERS page for starting pricing.

What is the difference between NatHERS and BASIX?

In NSW, a NatHERS certificate is often used to satisfy the "Thermal Comfort" section of a BASIX Certificate. While NatHERS focuses on the fabric of the building, BASIX also looks at water usage and energy loads.

Can I get a NatHERS Certificate for a renovation?

Yes. Many councils require a certificate for major additions to ensure the new section of the home meets modern energy efficiency standards.
